Ebb and Flow Stables
Ebb and Flow Stables is based in Port Elizabeth since 2001 and is run by the dynamic team of Anthony Kay, Cinzia Pasteris and AJ Radermacher. For the past 14 years they have been working as a team to strive for excellence in training and producing both top riders and horses for all disciplines. They pride themselves on choosing quality horses and ponies who are sound in mind and limb as well as being bred for the ‘job’ being show jumping, showing, dressage, eventing or polo. Anthony prefers a horse that is correct in conformation, athletic looking, has above average paces and a springy scopey jump. These horses are then brought on correctly and carefully with particular attention to allowing the horse to maintain a positive attitude.
Both warmbloods and thoroughbreds are sourced for sale, as Anthony still believes that thoroughbreds have a vital role to play as sporting horses. Ebb and Flow is lucky to have the choice of horses out of a number of yards at the large training centre in Port Elizabeth as well as throughout the country. Anthony feels that choosing horses is “a dream job” for him. Based on years of experience and a natural feel he chooses horses for all disciplines. He has a love of beautiful horses and says, “I can’t ride a beautiful lightly boned 15.3hh show hack myself but I can still buy it for one of my showing clients!” Different types of quality horses are chosen to suit different riders from hacks to A grades, Ebb and Flow has something for everyone. A wide variety of horses and ponies are on offer at any given time for all disciplines.
Pedigree is also an important factor in buying young horses, through years of experience and competing themselves both Maree and Anthony definitely have their favourites! In both thoroughbreds and warmbloods this is vital for predicting aptitude and future performance, also in the suitability of the horse for the rider. Certain pedigree traits work well with an inexperienced junior rider such as boldness, but a confident and accurate adult rider would prefer a more careful horse for example. The ‘right’ horse must also have a suitable temperament for the rider and this is definitely not something to be overlooked!
The training of the young horses is done in a careful and thorough manner which allows for successful longterm combinations. We feel that horses must be happy in their work and confident at the discipline in which they are destined to compete. Our horses are produced to perform not only for professional riders but also for amateurs. Maree and Anthony train all the horses themselves , this ensures an understanding of each horse on a personal level and allows us the added advantage of really understanding their own personalities. We do not believe in pushing our young horses who are starting out, in their work. We at Ebb and Flow Stables pride ourselves on giving careful attention to correct farrier work as well as well as attention to the horse’s soundness and welfare which we feel is paramount. Years of experience in choosing horses allows the Ebb and Flow team to assist and guide you to making the right purchase.
“Our business is based on relationships and trust, our loyal clients are the indication that we are doing our job well” says Anthony. A number of top coaches and riders are repeat clients having over the years bought many horses from our stable. Dominey Alexander, Claire Marcus Maloney, Trevor Lovegren, Jennifer Ford, Paige Shiller, Jade Hooke are just a few who have been loyal repeat clients.
Ebb and Flow and Anthony Kay have had great success with the training of competitive pupils. The latest success story is the brother and sister team Aj and Tyla Rademacher. Tyla had a fantastic year in 2012, she was the winner and second place in the SA Pony Riders Jumping Championship, winner of the SA Children’s Grand Prix, SA Champion Working Champion and Victor Ladorum at the SA Pony Rider Champs in 2012. She also went on to achieve her Junior Eastern Cape colours as well as winning a Masters Competition, jumping 1.6m on her new horse Ebb and Flow Twister, bought through Ebb and Flow, in the same year. AJ is also an accomplished young rider competing in the open classes on horses purchased through Anthony. He was the overall winner of the Stal van Dacraen competition last year.
Ebb and Flow has a very active riding school which is run by Maree and her qualified instructors Fiona Van Zyl and Madeleine Dore. The riding school feeds talented young riders through into the system and at present Anthony and Maree are training a number of talented young riders jumping their way up the grades. We are very proud of our up and coming young stars all of whom received their provincial colours at various levels for the upcoming SA Pony Rider Championships to be held in Port Elizabeth in July.
Anthony himself is a successful show jumper and has produced a number of horses to Open level and been a member of the Eastern Cape Provincial Jumping teams on numerous occassions right from his Junior career through into Adults. In recent years he has been concentrating on his pupils and business, however recently decided to purchase the talented young horse Assegai Sherman. Sherman is 17.1hh and is very careful with plenty of scope and has the ability to jump at the highest level. He was bred by Kerry Lonhurst of the Assegaai Stud in Grahamstown and is by the stallion Supreme ( by Stakkato) out of a Wunderbar mare. He has the bloodlines to jump to the top and is an exciting prospect for the future. Anthony believes that Sherman is the best horse he has ever ridden and is carefully bringing him up through the grades, currrently jumping in the 1.40m. Sherman is at present based in Johannesburg at Cellehof Stud. Anthony goes regularly to Johannesburg where he trains under the guidance of Dominey Alexander. Although Anthony, who is a qualified National Equitation Judge, has a very busy schedule he still makes time to give back to the sport by assisting with judging where he can.
Maree Lamont (nee Nortje) has also been competing since her children years. She has featured very prominently in the Showing circles winning Eastern Cape Adult Showing Championships twice. She has represented the Adult Eastern Cape Showing Team 6 times and is a Senior Provincial Showing Judge. Although she has done a lot of showing she has had success in various disciplines and has a love for show jumping having competed in the Open Classes for some time. She has a love and passion for bringing on young horses and has chosen to specialise in this field. Her careful attention to detail and her compassion when training young horses is what makes them such special “people’ and their new owners just love their new rides which have been brought on by Maree.
Maree personally enjoys riding a hot and forward and horse that takes you to the jump. She loves a horse with a scopy extravagant jump however says there is a place for all types of horses in the market place. Outside of the young horses which she is bringing on she also has four of her own rides – two warmbloods and two thoroughbreds which she competes in multi disciplines.
Ebb and Flow under the partnership of Maree and Anthony is a fun place to be, whether you are a rider, parent or looking to purchase a horse. During the mornings, the activities are focussed on the young horses with flat work training and jumping. Their extremely loyal stable staff are always around to assist and ensure that the horses are cared for correctly. Joseph who has been Anthony’s groom for 20 years, is master of the lunge arena and is always busy with lunging of the young horses. The afternoons are a hive of activity with the riding school and its young novice riders learning the basics in the one arena. The dressage arena always has a horse or two in it doing flat work and the jumping arena filled with happy laughing and chatting from all the riders coming in for lessons with Anthony. Parents always stay to watch and enjoy the social atmosphere of this very lively dynamic and very friendly yard. Its not uncommon to see parents proud photos all over Facebook of their children successfully doing some riding activity or another or just enjoying themselves at Ebb and Flow.
All in all a successful partnership with long term friendships are formed at Ebb and Flow. Whatever horse activity you are wanting to participate in – whether lessons for the starting out rider, or more competitive lessons with Anthony or you are looking to purchase a young horse or a more going horse – the people to contact are Anthony and Maree at Ebb and Flow Stables.
